North of the famous
dive sites of the Similans halfway between the
Similan Islands and Surin are the small rocky islands
of Koh Bon and Koh Tachai.
Koh Bon
features vertical walls that drop down to
depths of 40m to meet a gently sloping sandy bottom.
The area is a combination of soft and hard coral with
some unique colors not seen on the Similan Island.
Koh Tachai
offers three different dive sites featuring pinnacles
and swim-throughs as well as a good variety of hard
and soft coral. Larges schools of snapper and barracuda
are often seen on this site as well as various species
of parrot fish and groupers. Leopard sharks are also
quite often found in this area.
Part of the Surin Islands National Park, Richelieu
rock is 9 nautical miles due east of Koh Surin Tai.
This submerged limestone pinnacle lies just beneath
the surface going down to a sandy bottom at 36mThe abundance
of marine life on the main pinnacle and several of its'
smaller ones is awesome. With an explosion of colour
from the dense colonies of sea anemones, sponges and
gorgonian sea fans you will understand why this is rated
as one of the best dive sites. Other frequent visitors
to the area include shuffle nose rays otherwise know
as guitar sharks, eagle rays and schools of big eyed
jacks, barracuda and giant snappers.
