The Similan Islands
The
luxuriant jungle rainforests are inhabited by myriad
of bird species, squirrels, bats and monitor lizards.
The Islands are for the most part uninhabited except
for park ranger stations on Islands 4 & 8 with some
camping faculties and bungalows just being built.
The underwater landscape in these areas is just as
stunning. The eastern shore features gently sloping
coral reefs and drop offs with gardens of pristine hard
and soft coral. Superb visibility, teaming marine life
and moderate currents make this area a favorite for
divers of all experience levels. Thailand diving at its best.
The western coast line which is more exposed to the
summer monsoon is more rugged with weather beaten granite
boulders marking the landscape both on the surface and
underwater. This windward side has an underwater landscape
of tunnels, arches and swim-thoroughs adorned with stunning
soft corals. This western side generally has deeper
dives (10m – 45m), with stronger currents which
provide the necessary nutrients for a profusion of gorgonians,
crinoids, seafans and other colourful soft corals.
